The Warm Home Discount Scheme is scheduled to reopen shortly, coinciding with the arrival of cooler temperatures. The scheme, as detailed on Gov.uk, is set to commence at the end of October. This year, millions of households in the UK will benefit from one-time payments of £150 to alleviate the burden of high energy bills.
Leading energy providers like Octopus, British Gas, Ovo, E.on, and Scottish Power administer the scheme, under the oversight of Ofgem, the regulatory authority. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) plays a crucial role in identifying eligible individuals for the £150 payment.
As per the 2025/26 scheme details on Gov.uk, eligible recipients will have the discount applied directly to their electricity bill, resulting in a saving of £150. Even customers using pre-pay or pay-as-you-go meters can qualify for the discount, with the method of application varying based on each energy provider’s procedure.
Residents in England and Wales do not need to submit applications for the Warm Home Discount but must meet specific eligibility requirements outlined by the government. Eligibility is categorized into two Core Groups, necessitating individuals or their partners to fulfill certain conditions, including being named on the household electricity bill, receiving services from a designated energy provider, and meeting specific benefit criteria.
Recipients will be notified of their eligibility between October 2025 and early January 2026, with instructions outlined in the notification letter for further verification if required. Those who believe they qualify but have not received a letter by early January 2026 should contact the helpline by the end of February 2026 for assistance, with the £150 discount set to be applied to their electricity bill by March 31, 2026.
Certain groups, previously excluded from the scheme due to eligibility criteria, may now qualify under the expanded rules for the 2025/26 winter season. This includes lower-income households and disabled individuals who meet the revised qualification standards. Additionally, residents living permanently on park home sites and paying for electricity through the site owner may be eligible for the Park Homes Warm Home Discount Scheme, which is currently open for applications.
