Chilling video footage captured the moment when Mohammed Umar Khan, the perpetrator, entered a school premises before fatally stabbing 15-year-old Harvey Willgoose with a hunting knife. The disturbing video depicted Khan’s composed demeanor as he approached All Saints Catholic School in Sheffield in February.
Dressed in his coat, Khan wandered around the school building until a confrontation ensued in the presence of other students. Despite attempting to provoke Harvey, who remained calm, Khan was seen brandishing the knife in the school canteen before the tragic incident.
Following the removal of reporting restrictions by the judge, Khan was identified as the assailant who stabbed Harvey twice in the chest with a 13cm blade during lunch break. While he admitted to manslaughter but denied murder, a jury found him guilty with a majority verdict of 11 to one.
At Sheffield Crown Court, Khan was sentenced to a minimum of 16 years for murdering Harvey at their school. Judge Mrs. Justice Ellenbogen stated that Khan’s actions stemmed from hurt and anger over what he perceived as betrayal by Harvey, dismissing his claims of self-defense or fear of violence.
During his sentencing, Khan remained impassive in the dock, with an intermediary assisting him through the proceedings. Harvey’s parents, Mark and Caroline, observed from the public gallery, alongside Khan’s family.
Mrs. Justice Ellenbogen expressed certainty that Khan had premeditated using the knife on Harvey, emphasizing his history of carrying weapons and the aggravating circumstances of the offense being committed on school premises in the presence of numerous witnesses.
