Although it’s only October, preparations for the festive season are already underway in the royal households.
The Royal Collection Trust has announced the schedule for when the royal residences will be adorned for Christmas and open to visitors.
A highlight for royal enthusiasts is the opportunity to visit Windsor Castle during the Christmas period. From November 27 to January 5, 2026, the public can explore the stunning festive decorations, including a magnificent 20-foot Nordmann fir tree in St George’s Hall, sourced from Windsor Great Park.
In a traditional touch, another impressive 16-foot tree will grace the Crimson Drawing Room, offering visitors a festive spectacle. Additionally, guests with Christmas holiday tickets for the castle can engage in arts and crafts activities, creating special keepsakes.
This year, a unique winter wonderland experience awaits visitors at the Royal Mews shop at Buckingham Palace, featuring the Royal Collection Trust’s seasonal bestsellers, as clarified by Hello magazine.
In Scotland, festive celebrations can be enjoyed at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh from November 20 to January 5, 2026. Highlights include grand Christmas trees in the Throne Room and Great Gallery, festive wreaths, garlands, and a beautifully set dining table with silver service on display.
Special Christmas events at the Palace of Holyroodhouse include evening carol performances on December 9 and 10, and a Christmas activity day on December 13 with arts, crafts, and festive music.
As tradition dictates, the monarch will celebrate Christmas at Sandringham, with the Prince and Princess of Wales and other family members expected to attend. Notably absent this year will be Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, following requests from the monarch due to recent press revelations concerning their association with Jeffrey Epstein.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are unlikely to be invited, as they are anticipated to spend the holidays in California with their children and Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland.
Reflecting on past Christmas traditions, it is noted that Meghan Markle spent two Christmases with the royal family in 2017 and 2018, with her first invitation to Sandringham occurring before her marriage to Prince Harry.
