Google to End Chrome Support for Older macOS, Impacting MacBook Users

Must read

Google has announced that it will discontinue support for Chrome on older versions of Apple’s macOS platform, affecting users of MacBooks. While Chrome will remain functional on these devices, users will no longer receive updates or security patches, potentially leaving them exposed to security risks.

The change will impact Macs running macOS 12 (Monterey) or earlier, requiring users to upgrade to a newer operating system like macOS Ventura to continue using Chrome securely. Unfortunately, some older Mac models, such as iMacs predating 2017 and MacBook Air models before 2018, may not be compatible with Ventura, necessitating a new device purchase for continued Chrome usage.

The transition is set to take effect starting in July this year. Google stated that Chrome 150 is the final version supporting macOS 12 (Monterey), with Chrome 151, scheduled for release on July 28, 2026, requiring macOS 13 Ventura or later. Users are advised to ensure their devices run macOS 13 or newer to receive future Chrome updates.

While older Chrome versions will still function, no further updates will be provided for users on macOS 12. Google urges users to upgrade to a supported macOS version for continued security updates and access to the latest Chrome features.
