A mental health nurse is facing charges for allegedly raping a teenage patient multiple times at a psychiatric hospital in Baltimore County. The nurse, identified as Michael Cabanalan, 35, has been accused of committing second-degree rape and other sexual offenses against the 17-year-old victim.
According to police reports, Cabanalan had asked the victim for her phone number and Instagram details on September 4. Subsequently, he was observed entering the victim’s room numerous times during the night, where there were no surveillance cameras installed, and allegedly sexually assaulting her.
The victim, who had mental disabilities that precluded her from giving consent, was discharged from the hospital on September 8. However, Cabanalan reportedly picked her up from her residence and took her to his home, where he allegedly assaulted her again.
The teenager’s mother became aware of her daughter’s absence from home and used an app to locate her. The victim then disclosed the rape and assaults to her mother upon being confronted about leaving the house.
Following the incident report to the Child Protective Services, the Sheppard Pratt hospital, where Cabanalan was employed, suspended the nurse and later terminated his employment. Cabanalan was arrested by the Baltimore County Police on October 21.
In a statement to CBS Baltimore, Sheppard Pratt emphasized its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all individuals under its care. The hospital stated that it promptly reported the allegations to the authorities and is cooperating with the investigations.
Cabanalan is currently detained without bond at the Baltimore County Detention Center. Authorities have urged potential victims or anyone with relevant information to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation.
