“UK Shoe Retailer to Close Historic Store After 153 Years”

Must read

After 153 years of service, a longstanding UK shoe retailer is set to close one of its high street stores. Robin Elt Shoes in Worcester, which first opened its doors in 1872, will permanently shut down on January 10, 2026. Despite this closure, the retailer’s other branches in Hereford, Ludlow, Malvern, Leominster, and Totnes will continue operating as usual.

Managing director Jenny Elt expressed deep sadness over the closure, emphasizing that the family-run business could no longer sustain the location financially. She lamented the challenging decision, citing the store’s lack of long-term viability. Worcester City Council echoed these sentiments, recognizing the broader trend of online shopping impacting city centers and emphasizing efforts to support local traders.

The council highlighted Worcester’s unique shopping landscape, blending popular high street brands with independent retailers. Significant investments, including £4.5 million for public realm improvements, have been made to enhance the city center’s appeal and accessibility. Meanwhile, the charity shop chain Scope has also faced closures, with three high street branches shutting down recently as part of broader restructuring plans.

Scope’s closures in Morden, Torquay, and Washington are part of a strategy to close 77 shops this year due to financial challenges. Debbie Boylen, Scope’s head of retail, expressed regret over the closures, emphasizing the vital role these shops played in supporting the charity’s work with disabled individuals and families. The closures are expected to impact retail staff and volunteers, reflecting the broader shifts in the retail landscape.
