The emails from Rachel Reeves’s spouse are set to be released today amidst an ongoing dispute regarding their rented family residence.
This development follows the Chancellor’s acknowledgment last night of an unintentional oversight in failing to secure a license for their Dulwich property rental. The property, co-owned by Reeves and her husband, was placed on the market when they relocated to No11 Downing Street following the Labour Party’s victory last summer.
A spokesperson from 10 Downing Street stated this afternoon: “After examining the communication exchanged by the Chancellor’s partner, new details have emerged. This information has been forwarded to the Prime Minister and his independent adviser.”
Despite this, Downing Street emphasized the Prime Minister’s continued confidence in the Chancellor and assured that Reeves will present the Budget on November 26. The show of support came after Keir Starmer backed Reeves on Wednesday night following her apology for inadvertently renting out their family property without the required license.
Reeves informed the Prime Minister that she and her family were unaware of the necessity for a “selective license” in their Southwark neighborhood in London, where they leased their property for £3,200 per month after moving to No 11.
Southwark Council mandates that individuals renting out properties in specified areas must obtain a license beforehand.
Reeves stated: “Unfortunately, we were unaware of the requirement for a license, and therefore did not acquire one before renting out the property. This was an oversight on our part. Upon being made aware, we promptly took corrective measures and have since applied for the license. I sincerely apologize for this mistake and I am willing to address any queries.”
In his response, Starmer expressed satisfaction that the issue could be resolved after consulting his ethics adviser. He stated: “I have consulted with my Independent Adviser on Ministerial Standards this evening.
“He has advised me that, given your inadvertent failure to secure the necessary rental property license and your prompt actions to rectify the situation, including your apology, further investigation is not warranted.”
The Prime Minister remarked: “While it is unfortunate that the appropriate license was not obtained earlier, I commend your swift actions today to rectify this. It is evident that you are approaching this matter with the required urgency and gravity.”
Local councils possess the authority to mandate individuals renting out homes in specific areas to acquire a selective license. This measure aims to safeguard tenants against substandard rental properties and may also be implemented due to concerns about persistent anti-social behavior issues in rental accommodations.
