The Met Office has issued fresh weather alerts as Storm Benjamin heads towards the UK, causing potential travel disruptions. Yellow rain and wind warnings are in place for various regions in the UK on Thursday as Storm Benjamin moves across the nation. Rebekah Hicks, the Chief Meteorologist, stated: “A low-pressure system moving across southern parts of the UK tomorrow will bring heavy rain and strong winds. The rain is forecast to spread from the southwest this evening, extending northeastwards to many areas of England and Wales during Thursday, leading to challenging driving conditions and potential flooding in certain areas. Concurrently, strong winds are anticipated along southern coastal regions.
“However, it is on Thursday morning that significantly strong north-westerly winds will commence affecting western areas with gusts of 45 to 55 mph, reaching up to 55mph along coasts. Simultaneously, northerly winds are expected to intensify across eastern regions, with gusts of 50-60 mph widespread and up to 70 mph near certain coastlines. In the event that Storm Benjamin escalates towards the higher end of predictions, there is a slight possibility of localized wind gusts exceeding 70 mph temporarily.
“It is important to note the higher uncertainty surrounding the path and strength of this low-pressure system, thus the public is advised to stay updated with the latest forecasts and warnings as the situation evolves, as adjustments to the forecasts may occur on short notice.”
