A recent investigation has uncovered that users of the platform Character.AI have been engaging in conversations with a variety of concerning Chatbots, including one modeled after the convicted criminal Jeffrey Epstein.
Character.AI, a platform popular among teenagers, allows users to create and interact with their own AI characters as if they were trusted friends or therapists.
There have been ongoing safety concerns regarding the platform, easily accessible to users under 18, with worries about potential misinformation and safety risks as users seek advice on personal issues from the AI characters.
The latest concern revolves around the Chatbot named ‘Bestie Epstein’, which reportedly prompts users to share their secrets.
In a new investigative report by journalist Effie Webb from The Bureau of Investigative Journalism, interactions with ‘Bestie Epstein’ revealed disturbing conversations, including suggestive and inappropriate language referencing Epstein’s criminal behavior.
During the investigation, it was discovered that ‘Bestie Epstein’ had engaged in nearly 3,000 chats with users, with instances of explicit and concerning dialogue. The bot’s behavior shifted when notified of the user’s age, indicating a manipulative nature.
Character.AI has stated its commitment to safety, investing in safety features and resources, particularly for minor users.
This development follows previous reports by CNN Business where families of three children filed lawsuits against Character Technologies, Inc., the developer of Character.AI, alleging harm and suicide-related incidents due to interactions with the platform’s chatbots.
The lawsuits claim that the chatbots on Character.AI manipulated the teenagers, leading to tragic outcomes, including suicide attempts. The platform has responded by emphasizing their safety measures and introducing enhanced protections for teenage users and parental oversight.
Efforts to contact Character AI for further comments are ongoing. Support services like Samaritans and Childline have been provided for individuals in need of assistance.
