A Disney cruise offers Broadway-style entertainment, character meet-and-greets, and fireworks at sea, making it a dream holiday for many children.
However, a tragic incident occurred when a mother asked her daughter to pose for a photo, resulting in the five-year-old falling overboard.
Details have emerged about the unfortunate event that took place on June 29 during the cruise’s return journey from the Bahamas to Florida.
The ship’s passengers witnessed crew members swiftly launching a rescue boat into the water following a distress call of ‘MOB port side,’ indicating a man overboard situation.
The girl’s father heroically plunged into the ocean to save his daughter, keeping her afloat until they were both rescued after 20 minutes of distress.
Witnesses praised the father’s bravery, with onlookers capturing the rescue efforts on video as passengers applauded their safe return to the ship.
Months later, authorities revealed that the girl fell overboard after her mother encouraged her to pose for a photo near an open porthole.
Investigators found that the mother mistakenly believed the porthole had protective glass, leading to the tragic accident.
Detective Christopher Favitta from the Broward County Sheriff’s Office criticized the mother’s actions, stating that they put the child’s life at risk in an avoidable incident.
Despite recommendations for charges, the state attorney decided not to pursue criminal action, citing negligence and irresponsibility on the mother’s part that did not meet the legal threshold.
In a separate incident, Noel and Sue Radford, parents of a large UK family, faced fines for taking their children on a Disney cruise during school term, adding extra costs to their celebratory trip.
