“Zohran Mamdani Makes History as NYC’s First Muslim Mayor”

Must read

Zohran Mamdani secured over a million votes in the recent New York City Mayoral election, making history as the city’s first Muslim, South Asian mayor at the age of 34. He is set to assume office in January, accompanied by his wife, Rama Duwaji, an accomplished illustrator who will become the city’s inaugural Gen Z First Lady at just 28 years old.

The couple’s love story began on the dating app Hinge in 2021, leading to their engagement in October 2024 and a Nikkah ceremony in Dubai in December 2024, followed by a civil ceremony at Lower Manhattan’s City Hall in February. Mamdani, the son of renowned filmmaker Mira Nair and Columbia University professor Mahmood Mamdani, delivered a passionate speech to his supporters in Brooklyn, emphasizing his identity as a Muslim and democratic socialist.

With plans for progressive policies such as free public transportation, rent freezes, reduced police presence, and higher taxes for the affluent and large corporations, Mamdani aims to bring significant change to the city. His bold remarks to former President Trump drew cheers from the crowd, showcasing the enthusiasm surrounding his historic victory.

The couple is expected to relocate to Gracie Mansion next year, the official mayoral residence with a rich history dating back to 1799 as one of Manhattan’s oldest surviving wooden structures.
