Larry and Deborah Dutton, caring grandparents who had adopted their teenage granddaughter Heidi, provided a nurturing environment for her in Dewey, Oklahoma. Having taken Heidi in as an infant, the couple raised her in their rural farmhouse, known for their kindness and generosity within the close-knit community.
Larry, a retired US Air Force master staff sergeant and former airport manager, and Deborah, also a retired Air Force member with a background in culinary arts, were married for 40 years and actively involved in church activities and local fundraisers. Their granddaughter, Heidi Dutton, 17 at the time, had been in a relationship with Lucas Walker, 20, which seemed to have a negative impact on her behavior.
Concerns arose in January 2023 when neighbors and family noticed the absence of Larry and Deborah since before Christmas. Several requests were made for a police welfare check on the couple’s property in Dewey, leading to a startling discovery.
Upon entering the premises with a search warrant, authorities detected suspicious odors and signs of attempted cleanup inside the house. Further investigation revealed bloodstains, hidden jewelry, and clothing, culminating in the discovery of Deborah and Larry’s bodies in a shallow grave in the backyard.
Dutton and Walker were arrested at the scene, confessing to the murders that took place in December. Details emerged of a premeditated attack where Walker had fatally shot and stabbed Deborah before assaulting Larry. The couple then attempted to conceal the crime by cleaning up the scene and burying the victims in the backyard.
The investigation revealed a chilling account of the events, with Larry’s phone footage capturing the disturbing act of moving the bodies. Both teens were sentenced for their roles in the murders, with Walker receiving 35 years in prison for second-degree murder, while Dutton, 19, was sentenced to life with eligibility for parole after serving 85% of a 45-year term for first-degree murder and conspiracy.
The tragic case shocked the community, raising questions about the motive behind the heinous crime. Despite the lack of a clear motive, justice was served, holding the perpetrators accountable for the brutal act that betrayed the trust and love shown by Larry and Deborah towards their granddaughter.
