Police in Brisbane, Australia, are currently investigating five alarming cases of rat poisoning, which have affected three families in the same neighborhood. Among the victims is a child who fell ill due to suspected ingestion of brodifacoum, a common ingredient in rat poison that hampers blood clotting by interfering with vitamin K.
The individuals were rushed to different hospitals in the area after showing symptoms like bleeding gums, excessive bleeding from minor injuries, lethargy, and bruising. In severe cases, brodifacoum poisoning can be fatal, with a lethal dose estimated to be around 15mg per kg of body weight. Children are considered more vulnerable to the effects of this toxic substance.
Health authorities have assured the public that there are no links to food outlets, emphasizing that the investigations are ongoing to pinpoint the exact source of contamination. Interviews are being conducted to establish connections between the cases, with the police collaborating closely with health officials. Thankfully, no new cases have been reported, but medical professionals are advised to remain vigilant for any unexplained bleeding symptoms.
The health minister and chief health officer have confirmed that the incidents are not deemed suspicious, and all possible scenarios are being considered in the investigation. While two patients required hospitalization, the others are receiving treatment at home. Both health and law enforcement agencies are working together to unravel the mystery behind these poisoning incidents.
