Virgin Media has shared some valuable tips to ensure optimal internet speeds throughout the year. Placing your router in a central location, rebooting it monthly, and avoiding signal interference from objects like fish tanks are common practices to enhance performance. However, it’s essential to note that changes in weather conditions can also impact your connectivity.
As temperatures climb in late spring and summer, routers may face increased strain, emphasizing the importance of keeping them in cool, well-ventilated areas.
Discussing the effects of warmer weather on broadband speeds, Virgin Media highlighted in a recent blog post that high temperatures can stress broadband equipment both indoors and outdoors.
Virgin Media explained, “While external equipment is designed to withstand high temperatures, internal routers may struggle if exposed to excessive heat. Routers require adequate airflow for optimal functioning. Placing your router behind a TV, in a confined space, near a heat source, or in direct sunlight can lead to heat accumulation, particularly during a heatwave, resulting in slower speeds, connection drops, or automatic restarts to cool down.”
To prevent performance issues during warm weather, it’s recommended to relocate your router to a cooler environment. While hot temperatures can affect performance, other weather conditions are less likely to disrupt your internet activities.
Virgin Media added, “Most broadband issues attributed to weather actually originate indoors. Factors like thick walls, excessive connected devices, and poor router placement typically have a more significant daily impact on your connection than external weather conditions.”
For optimal Wi-Fi performance, Virgin Media suggests placing the router in a central, open location away from direct sunlight and avoiding obstruction by large metal objects or furniture.
After severe weather, it is advised to inspect and secure cables to maintain connectivity. Additionally, reducing interference by minimizing concurrent device connections can enhance your internet experience.
