A tragic incident occurred when a small aircraft, en route to deliver aid for hurricane relief efforts in Jamaica, crashed into a pond within a residential area of Coral Springs, a suburb of Fort Lauderdale. Unfortunately, both individuals on board lost their lives in the crash.
Rescue operations revealed no survivors, leading authorities to transition to recovery efforts overseen by local law enforcement. Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries to residents in the vicinity.
Broward County, the departure and crash location of the plane, is renowned for its vibrant Caribbean American community, which had been actively collecting relief items post-Hurricane Melissa, a devastating Category 5 storm that struck Jamaica recently.
Following a distress call reporting the crash, responders from the Coral Springs-Parkland Fire Department swiftly arrived at the scene. Although no residences were harmed, debris near a neighborhood retention pond indicated the crash site.
Deputy Chief Mike Moser mentioned that despite the absence of a visible plane, divers searched the pond for victims to no avail. Subsequent search efforts failed to locate any casualties, prompting a shift to recovery operations by the police, with aviation authorities set to investigate the crash’s cause.
Witness Kenneth DeTrolio recounted the harrowing experience of the plane crashing through his property, causing damage to his fence and surrounding vegetation. The impact left his yard strewn with wreckage and his home contaminated with fuel, requiring several hours for the odor to dissipate.
The Beechcraft King Air aircraft departed from Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport before crashing shortly after takeoff. Aerial footage depicted the plane colliding with trees and a residential fence before submerging in a nearby lake.
Federal Aviation Administration records indicate that the plane is registered to International Air Services, a company specializing in facilitating aircraft registration for non-U.S. citizens. The company declined to comment when contacted by a reporter.
