Argos is currently offering a popular alternative to Sky Q-style upgrades with the Manhattan S4-R set-top box. This device, which was recently introduced, provides similar features to Sky’s premium service, such as recording shows, pausing live TV, and storing content on its internal hard drive.
The standout feature of the Manhattan S4-R is its pricing structure. Unlike Sky Q, where users have to pay monthly fees, the Manhattan S4-R grants access to over 100 channels without any ongoing costs once the device is purchased. This is made possible by the device’s compatibility with Freesat, utilizing an existing satellite dish to deliver free TV channels directly to the television. Channels available include BBC, ITV1, Channel 4, E4, Legend, Sky Mix, TLC, U&Dave, and That’s TV 2.
The Manhattan S4-R boasts a user-friendly interface, built-in search functionalities, and access to a vast library of on-demand content totaling over 60,000 hours. Supported apps include BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, and My5. While it may not offer premium sports and movie packages like Sky Q, Freesat’s appeal lies in its cost-free viewing experience.
Retailing at £219.99, the Manhattan S4-R 500GB model is currently available at Argos and Amazon, with larger 1TB and 2TB versions expected to launch soon. The device is in high demand, as indicated by Argos listing it as “selling fast” and “in demand.”
Manhattan’s COO, Alex Arbab-Zadeh, expressed the company’s goal of providing a subscription-free experience to Freesat users akin to their T4-R Freeview recorder. The S4-R enhances recording capabilities by allowing up to four simultaneous recordings, surpassing the previous two-channel limit. It serves as an attractive alternative for households seeking a more affordable TV solution with increased flexibility and choice.
Another disruptor in the TV market is the Pleio puck, offering Freely streaming access to TVs without requiring an aerial. This device delivers over 50 live channels via the internet, diverging from traditional broadcast methods. After initial stock shortages, the Pleio puck is now back on sale through retailers like Amazon and eBay, priced at £99.99, inclusive of a gaming controller and access to over 200 online games.
