“Bear Attack Survivor Recounts Terrifying Encounter”

Must read

A man who had a terrifying encounter with a bear shared his harrowing experience of the moment before the animal attacked him, leaving him unconscious with a skull fracture. Dan Bigley narrowly escaped death after the bear’s teeth cracked his skull, although his brain remained intact.

Despite surviving the attack, Dan lost his sight. Two decades later, he vividly recounted the life-altering incident, remembering the chilling noise he heard just before believing he was facing his demise.

Living in Alaska for many years, Dan recounted the events leading up to the attack while walking through the forest post a fishing trip with his friend Jana. The peaceful excursion turned into a nightmare when they stumbled upon the bear.

Coastal Alaska is known for its massive brown bears, some towering over 9 feet and weighing up to 1,500 pounds. These bears exhibit remarkable speed, capable of outrunning humans at speeds of 35 to 40mph over short distances.

Although Dan had previous encounters with bears, this one appeared visibly agitated and hostile. Despite attempting to retreat, the bear, protecting her cubs nearby, lunged at Dan, leading to a vicious attack.

During the brutal mauling, Dan vividly recalled the horrifying realization of the sound of his own screams. The bear sunk its teeth into his head, causing multiple injuries and rendering him unconscious multiple times during the ordeal.

After the bear left, assuming Dan was dead, Jana and local fishermen provided immediate assistance until emergency services arrived. Dan suffered severe injuries, including severed arteries, described as life-threatening by doctors. Following extensive surgery and a medically-induced coma, Dan embarked on a long journey to recovery.

Haunted by the traumatic incident, Dan shared his struggle to overcome the psychological impact of the attack. His resilience and determination eventually led him to write a book, “Beyond the Bear: How I Learned to Live and Love Again after Being Blinded by a Bear,” recounting his journey to healing and acceptance.

Dan, now residing in Anchorage with his family, reflected on the transformative power of sharing his story and the therapeutic process that helped him move beyond the trauma, emphasizing the importance of personal growth and resilience in overcoming adversity.
