A massive search is underway following the fatal shooting of two individuals and injuries to at least 10 others in a popular tourist destination in Britain.
Authorities have reported that potentially five armed individuals are at large in the village of Vorizia, Crete, Greece. A significant operation involving specialized police units is ongoing, combing through the canyons and mountains in the vicinity of the village where the tragic incident occurred.
Local emergency services have transported six individuals to the hospital with various injuries related to the shooting, suspected to be connected to a family feud.
Police have placed the Greek village under heavy military presence following the violent episode, with top police officials swiftly arriving at the scene. Two suspects are currently hospitalized under police supervision as investigations continue into their involvement in the armed confrontation.
Authorities have detained two individuals, with suspicions that additional suspects may be hiding in nearby areas. The gunmen are reported to have used AK-47s and shotguns during the incident.
Earlier, an explosive device detonated at a construction site in the village without causing any injuries, as reported by MailOnline.
The two families implicated in the conflict have a history of disputes, primarily related to land issues, which escalated in 2024 when one family member acquired land within the other family’s territory, leading to the recent violent events.
Residents in the village express apprehension amid the manhunt, with one individual remarking on the heightened vigilance towards passing vehicles.
Initial reports suggested that the 56-year-old woman had succumbed to a heart attack, but autopsy results revealed gunshot wounds as the cause of death. A family member disclosed, “The 56-year-old sustained a gunshot to the right side, penetrating her lungs and exiting through her spine.”
Funeral arrangements for the victims have been postponed due to safety concerns, with local schools closed until Tuesday as a precaution.
Crete has a history of illegal gun possession and longstanding family conflicts, particularly over land disputes, prevalent on Greece’s largest island.
