“Manchester Mayor Burnham Eyes Westminster Return”

Must read

Andy Burnham’s aspiration to lead the Labour Party has been well-known. Referred to as the “King of the North,” Burnham has previously contested for the leadership in 2010 and 2015. Last year, he diplomatically mentioned uncertainty about the future.

Speculation has been rife since last summer that the Greater Manchester Mayor is eyeing a return to Westminster. Burnham hinted at potential support from MPs to challenge the Prime Minister, causing a stir at the Labour conference and upsetting Downing Street.

Despite being viewed as a strong contender, Burnham’s non-MP status has been a hindrance. There were rumors of a plan for him to take over a parliamentary seat, but MP Andrew Gwynne, who won comfortably in 2024, dismissed this notion.

Gwynne, suspended for inappropriate messages, recently announced his resignation, triggering a by-election. This move opens up the opportunity for Burnham to run for MP, potentially relinquishing his mayoral position. However, obstacles remain for his return to Westminster, including potential opposition within Labour’s NEC.

Challenges loom ahead, with a tough by-election expected amid Labour’s waning popularity in national polls. Opposition parties are gearing up for a showdown in Gorton and Denton, with Reform UK pledging a vigorous campaign. The Green Party’s Zack Polanski may also join the race, aiming to expand the party’s presence in Parliament.

Facing a pivotal decision, Burnham must weigh the risks and rewards as he contemplates his political future.
