“Virgin Media O2 to Discontinue 2G Network by 2029”

Must read

Although newer phones are now utilizing faster 4G and 5G networks, the older 2G technology is still in use throughout the UK. Introduced in 1993, 2G continues to support certain devices like phones, alarms, and health equipment.

However, the era of 2G is approaching its end as Virgin Media O2 has announced plans to shut down this network by 2029. This decision is part of the company’s strategy to enhance its network infrastructure and enhance future connectivity.

The discontinuation of 2G will enable Virgin Media O2 to focus on expanding and improving its 4G and 5G networks. The company anticipates that this upgrade will result in faster speeds, more reliable connections, and reduced energy consumption, addressing the evolving needs of consumers.

Jeanie York, Chief Technology Officer at Virgin Media O2, stated, “We are investing £700m this year to upgrade our mobile network and meet the growing consumer demands. By phasing out the outdated 2G network, we aim to provide all customers with reliable 4G and 5G services.”

With the scheduled shutdown in 2029, customers and businesses will have time to prepare and transition any devices reliant on 2G technology. Despite 2G’s longevity and benefits like energy efficiency and broad coverage, the move away from it will allow Virgin Media O2 to allocate resources to advanced connectivity solutions.
