Italian authorities are on the lookout for a Bulgarian woman in connection with the killing of British student Meredith Kercher. Kercher, a 21-year-old University of Leeds exchange student, was murdered in 2007 while studying in Umbria. The case gained worldwide attention as American citizen Amanda Knox and her Italian partner were initially convicted of the murder before being acquitted by Italy’s highest court.
Another student, Rudy Guede, received a 30-year sentence for Kercher’s murder in 2008, which was later reduced on appeal. Guede was released in 2021 due to good behavior and is now facing trial for a separate rape case. Prosecutors are now focusing on a Bulgarian woman who left Italy shortly after Kercher’s death.
The lead investigator from the 2000s, Giuliano Mignini, revealed that a credible source has identified a new suspect linked to the case, a woman who was present in the area at the time of the murder. Mignini emphasized the importance of locating this individual for the case.
Authorities clarify that the Bulgarian woman is currently considered a person of interest and may not necessarily be a suspect but could potentially serve as a witness. The Kercher family’s lawyer, Francesco Maresca, expressed the family’s desire for more information on the new developments and reiterated their focus on Meredith’s memory and aspirations.
In a recent event, the Kercher family criticized Amanda Knox for allegedly exploiting their daughter’s murder in her Disney+ series, despite being acquitted a decade ago. Maresca emphasized the importance of honoring Meredith’s life and legacy in any media portrayal.
