In another development, it was revealed that Mandelson had been removed from his honorary role at the Design Museum following controversy surrounding his association with Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender. The decision was made by Prime Minister Keir Starmer in response to revelations about Mandelson’s close ties to Epstein.
Further scrutiny revealed that Mandelson maintained contact with Epstein until 2016, as evidenced by emails exchanged between the two. Despite his previous position as Chair of Trustees at the Design Museum, his profile was removed from the museum’s website after inquiries were made.
The Design Museum clarified that Mandelson’s tenure as Chair of Trustees had ended in 2023 and that he no longer held any formal position within the institution. The museum emphasized that the honorary title of “Trustee Emeriti” carried no active responsibilities or involvement in governance.
Mandelson’s communications with Epstein, even after the latter’s criminal conviction, raised concerns about his judgment and ethics. His association with Epstein tarnished his reputation, leading to his removal from prestigious roles, including at the Design Museum.
As a registered charity, the Design Museum received funding from various sources, including £1.3 million from the Arts and Humanities Research Council in the 2023-2024 fiscal year. Mandelson, who expressed regret over his association with Epstein, was approached for comments regarding his position at the Design Museum.
