“Media Figure Buried Alive in Kidnapping Gone Awry”

Must read

A prominent media figure met a tragic end when he was buried alive in a 6-foot box during a kidnapping that went terribly wrong.

Stephen Small, a well-known businessman and the heir to a family legacy, fell victim to a kidnapping orchestrated by a small-time drug dealer named Danny Edwards. Edwards, posing as a police officer, abducted Stephen in 1987 and demanded a ransom of $1 million from his family.

Initially planned to hold Stephen captive in rural Chicago until the ransom was paid, the scheme took a deadly turn. Edwards, with the help of his coerced partner Nancy Rish, buried Stephen alive in a small box in a forest in Kankakee, Illinois. Despite providing some basic necessities in the box, Stephen tragically lost his life.

Following the crime, Nancy Rish, who was a victim of domestic abuse at the hands of Edwards, was eventually released from prison in 2022 after a change in the law. Edwards, initially sentenced to death for the murder, had his punishment commuted to life imprisonment. Rish, expressing remorse for her involvement, successfully challenged her sentence based on being a victim of intimate partner violence.

Rish’s defense team argued that she was manipulated and threatened by Edwards, highlighting the lasting impact of domestic violence on her life. The court ultimately reduced Rish’s concurrent sentences for murder and kidnapping by 50% after considering her circumstances and efforts towards rehabilitation.

The Small family did not oppose the ruling, and Nancy Rish was released on parole in February 2022. The case shed light on the complexities of intimate partner violence and its long-lasting effects on victims.
