Criticism mounts over Meghan Markle’s royal-themed product launch

Must read

Meghan Markle is facing criticism over her most recent release under her brand, As Ever. The Duchess of Sussex is being accused of attempting to capitalize on her royal connections in the marketing campaign for her new product. Prior to its unveiling, Meghan, the former Suits actress, had been building anticipation for the launch throughout the week, but some fans were disappointed with the execution.

In a video posted on Instagram, Meghan was shown working at her desk next to one of her new $64 candles and a blue notebook, prominently displaying the royal cypher in gold on the cover. The monogram, featuring the letter M with a crown atop, was initially shared before Meghan’s marriage to Prince Harry in 2018. However, fans expressed dissatisfaction with its use following Meghan and Harry’s decision to step back from their royal duties in 2020.

After relocating to Montecito with their children and distancing themselves from royal responsibilities, Meghan’s decision to incorporate the royal symbol in her latest product line has drawn criticism online. Social media users have voiced their disapproval, with one Twitter user commenting, “Another example of Meghan putting her royal cypher on pretty much anything, you can see it on her notebook in the latest Instagram story.”

Furthermore, another individual remarked, “I rather think that was the point. Pretty difficult to sell a candle for that price if it’s not royal,” while a third added, “It’s pathetic at this point. If you must remind everyone you’re connected to royalty, you’re not royal at all.”

Meghan’s As Ever website describes the product as evoking the essence of a day in the English countryside and recalling the Duchess’ cherished memories of her wedding day in Windsor on May 19, 2018. The recent releases, including a new line of scented candles and a wine launch, signify a significant evolution for Meghan’s lifestyle brand, which was launched in March 2025, inspired by the season of giving.

Introducing two new products to the As Ever range, Meghan showcased ceramic scented candles in the Christmas collection, named after significant dates in her life. One of the candles, named 519 in reference to her wedding day, features fragrances of Moroccan mint and white tea notes. The other candle, No. 084, inspired by her August 4 birthday, includes hints of sandalwood, lotus, and poppy.

During her visit to Washington DC for Fortune’s annual Most Powerful Women Summit, Meghan shared insights about the future of her lifestyle brand, expressing her excitement for upcoming product launches to accelerate her business expansion.
