A young boy, Nathaniel Burton, tragically fell victim to his mother’s repeated attempts to end his life despite his desperate efforts to seek help. Nathaniel lived in constant fear of his mother, Sarah Safranek, who he believed was capable of harming him. Despite his alarming warnings to his grandmothers and interactions with social services, Safranek’s sinister intentions towards Nathaniel were overlooked, leading to the devastating outcome of his suffocation at her hands in their home.
Before his untimely death on February 18, 2021, Nathaniel confided in his grandmother about his mother’s actions, expressing his fear of being killed. Court records revealed Nathaniel’s consistent distress, with him recounting how his mother had tried to suffocate him and restrict his breathing. Safranek, now serving a 35-year prison sentence for first-degree murder, denied Nathaniel’s claims, dismissing them as lies.
Reports indicated that Nathaniel had previously shared disturbing incidents with his foster family and paternal grandmother about his mother’s violent behavior. Despite efforts to involve child services, concerns raised by family members and multiple visits from the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services failed to prevent Nathaniel’s tragic fate.
Furthermore, evidence presented in court highlighted Safranek’s troubling internet searches related to child harm, cremation costs, and methods of causing harm. Her journal entries revealed disturbing reflections on her treatment of her children, raising further concerns about her mental state.
Following the court proceedings, Judge Anthony Peska mandated Safranek to serve her full sentence and additional supervised release upon completion.
