A recent report from consumer advocate Which? reveals that some of the major broadband providers in the UK are failing to meet customer expectations for reliable service. The study shows that smaller alternative networks, known as “alt-nets,” are surpassing big brands by offering faster speeds, more reliable connections, and better value.
The research highlights that internet connection issues are prevalent, with frequent dropouts being the top complaint. Customers also expressed frustrations over slow download speeds and service outages, with a significant 91% reporting problems with their web service in the past year.
Among the prominent providers, Sky faced criticism for frequent dropouts, affecting 38% of its customers. Virgin Media also received poor feedback, with 30% of users experiencing regular connection dropouts despite paying premium prices for broadband.
In contrast, smaller providers like Zen Internet, Community Fibre, and Hyperoptic received positive reviews for their reliability and service quality. Plusnet stood out among larger providers, surpassing rivals such as Vodafone, EE, BT, and Sky.
Which? emphasizes that smaller broadband firms consistently outperform major providers in terms of reliability, customer service, and value. They encourage households to explore alternative providers in their area and consider switching for better service. Using Ofcom’s broadband checker can help identify available networks.
The study reveals a list of winners and losers in customer ratings, with Zen and Hyperoptic leading the pack. Natalie Hitchins, Head of Home Products and Services at Which?, notes the importance of good-quality broadband as an essential service and urges consumers to choose providers that prioritize customer satisfaction.
In response to the report, a Virgin Media spokesperson highlighted ongoing investments to improve services and cited positive performance metrics from independent sources. They emphasized Virgin Media’s top-ranking across various broadband categories for download speed, upload speed, quality, video experience, and reliability.
Overall, the findings underscore the growing influence of customer feedback in the broadband industry and the importance of delivering reliable and high-quality services to meet consumer expectations.
