Iranian Refugee Finds Running Fulfillment in Canada

Must read

Ladan Jahankha finds fulfillment in being part of her local running community, as it represents a realization of her aspirations. Having previously resided in Iran, where women face significant limitations in sports participation, Jahankha expresses gratitude for the opportunities she now enjoys in St. John’s. In Iran, female athletes are subject to stringent dress codes for public competitions, with the government restricting their involvement in various sporting events.

The challenges Jahankha faced in pursuing running in Tehran lingered as unfulfilled dreams until she relocated. Now settled in St. John’s and working as a teacher, she reignited her interest in running after connecting with a colleague who shared her passion. Through social media, Jahankha discovered a running group that provided her with a coach and a supportive beginner cohort.

In addition to serving as a stress-reliever amid ongoing tensions related to the U.S.-Iran conflict, running has become an integral part of Jahankha’s life. She recently ran a Pride race with her family and is gearing up for another 5-kilometer race in August. Embracing the freedom and opportunities available in Canada, Jahankha expresses gratitude for the newfound liberties she cherishes.
