Ukrainian anti-corruption authorities revealed on Wednesday that they are looking into high-ranking officials in President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s administration. This development comes after the country’s recently dismissed defense minister called for national elections amid the ongoing conflict with Russia’s invasion. The investigation focuses on exposing a purported criminal network led by a current and former lawmaker, which allegedly involves officials from the president’s office. Zelenskyy has taken action by dismissing Iryna Mudra from her position as deputy head of the office. The probe poses a new challenge to Zelenskyy’s leadership, following previous political upheavals within his government. The parliament has approved the appointment of Yevhenii Khmara as the new defense minister, nominated by Zelenskyy after the removal of Mykhailo Fedorov last month.
In a surprising move, Fedorov, in a video statement posted online, called for elections in Ukraine, challenging Zelenskyy’s stance due to the martial law in place. Fedorov highlighted the need for democratic processes to continue despite the prolonged conflict, criticizing the governance system for hindering progress and combating corruption.
