In a strategic move to address climate change, the United Nations has recognized that the opportunity to avert some of the most severe consequences of global warming has been lost. Officials emphasize the urgent need to bring temperatures back down from dangerous levels to ensure a safe environment.
According to a recent report by the United Nations Environment Program, Earth is on track to surpass the agreed-upon safe temperature limit set by the 2015 Paris climate agreement due to the continued use of coal, oil, and gas. Despite this, experts suggest focusing efforts on curbing excessive warming and then lowering temperatures to the agreed threshold. However, this process is expected to bring about decades of heightened weather-related disasters, rising sea levels, species extinctions, and the melting of ice and glaciers.
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres expressed concern, stating, “Humanity is rapidly approaching the limit to avert a climate disaster.”
The new approach outlined in the report aims to reduce fossil fuel consumption and devise methods to extract carbon dioxide from industries to reverse the overshoot in temperatures. Climate scientist Richard Betts from the University of Exeter acknowledged the challenging reality but highlighted the potential to mitigate further warming.
The report indicates that global temperatures have already surpassed the critical threshold of 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. While it seems unlikely to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, the report finally acknowledges that the world will exceed this threshold in the near future.
In a best-case scenario, if nations adopt ambitious climate targets, warming could peak at 1.8 degrees Celsius by mid-century. However, current policies are projected to push temperatures to 2.6 degrees Celsius by 2100. The UN urges policymakers to prepare for a future where the temperature threshold is exceeded, then corrected to stabilize temperatures.
The report envisions a trajectory where global temperatures will rise, peak, and gradually decrease below the 1.5-degree Celsius mark by the end of the century, a phase described as “overshoot.” UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen emphasized the continued importance of the 1.5-degree target and the need for a revised approach.
During this period of overshoot, the report warns of increased human health impacts, food scarcity, water shortages, economic disruptions, and species extinction due to extreme climate events. Experts stress the urgency of limiting peak warming to mitigate these risks.
Elisabeth Gilmore, a contributor to the UNEP report, emphasized the need for transformative adaptation to address the challenges posed by rising temperatures. The report also highlights irreversible tipping points and the potential loss of critical ecosystems, urging innovative solutions for carbon removal.
