Voters are set to cast their ballots on Monday in three federal byelections in different Canadian ridings. The byelections are happening in North Vancouver-Capilano, Beaches-East York, and Chicoutimi-Le Fjord. With the Liberals currently holding 170 seats in the House of Commons and the opposition parties collectively having 166 seats, the Liberals need to win at least two of the byelections to maintain control of the legislative agenda once all seats are filled.
The most closely contested race is anticipated in Chicoutimi-Le Fjord, where the seat was vacated by former Conservative MP Richard Martel, who resigned after being appointed to the Senate. Polls indicate a tight race between the Liberals, represented by Daniel Gobeil, and the Bloc Québécois, with Caroline Dubé as their candidate. Other contenders in the riding include Régis Gaudreault for the Conservatives, Raphaël Émond for the New Democratic Party, and Nathe Perrone for the Green Party.
In Beaches-East York, candidates are vying to succeed former Liberal MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, who won the riding with a substantial margin in the 2025 federal election. The candidates in this riding are Tanveer Shahnawaz for the Liberals, Jim Syrbos for the Conservatives, Shannon Devine for the NDP, and Bruce Livesey for the Green Party.
Meanwhile, in North Vancouver-Capilano, the candidates are competing to fill the seat left vacant by former Liberal MP Jonathan Wilkinson, who resigned to become Canada’s ambassador to the European Union. The candidates in this riding are Braeden Caley for the Liberals, Stephen Curran for the Conservatives, Stephen Tweedale for the NDP, and Shelley Luce for the Green Party.
CBC News will provide special coverage of the byelections with chief political correspondent Rosemary Barton and Power & Politics host David Cochrane starting at 9:30 p.m. ET. If the Liberals do not secure victory in all three byelections, they will have more opportunities in the future to attain the two wins required for a majority.
Further byelections are pending in Quebec’s Saint-Hyacinthe-Bagot-Acton, Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie, and Laurier-Sainte-Marie ridings, as well as in Ontario’s Scarborough North riding. Additionally, Conservative MP Cathay Wagantall is expected to officially resign from her seat in the Saskatchewan riding of Yorkton-Melville on Monday, and Conservative MP Larry Brock plans to step down from his seat in the Ontario riding of Brantford-Brant South-Six Nations next month.
