“Canada Boosts Search and Rescue Volunteer Support”

Must read

The Canadian federal government recently unveiled a multi-million dollar funding initiative to bolster support for search and rescue volunteers across the country. Eleanor Olszewski, the Minister of Emergency Management and Community Resilience, disclosed the $3 million three-year funding agreement with the Search and Rescue Volunteer Association of Canada (SARVAC) in Yellowknife. This funding will allocate $1 million annually to numerous ground search and rescue teams, comprising approximately 10,000 volunteers.

Minister Olszewski highlighted the significance of search and rescue efforts during her visit to Inuvik and Tuktoyaktuk alongside Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Rebecca Alty. The vastness and challenging terrain of these regions underscored the critical importance of local knowledge and swift response times in rescue operations.

The federal funding will be utilized to establish and uphold national ground search and rescue standards and implement a national volunteer insurance program. Bill Peck, the director of SARVAC in the Northwest Territories, emphasized the vital role of this funding for the national volunteer organization. He emphasized that the financial support will enhance the organization’s stability, continuity, and long-term planning capabilities.

In the previous year, volunteers within the SARVAC network were mobilized for over 2,900 search missions, contributing more than 222,000 volunteer hours. Peck emphasized the unique challenges faced in northern and remote regions, citing vast distances, isolated communities, harsh environments, and limited resources. He stressed the essential nature of volunteers and emphasized that funding will enhance their crisis response capacity.

The allocated funding will also support the maintenance of the e-learning platform and the AdventureSmart Program, an educational initiative aimed at search and rescue prevention, both of which are facilitated by volunteers.
