Cadillac has received a caution against potentially signing Mick Schumacher to drive for their upcoming Formula 1 team. Schumacher, a German racer, is among the contenders linked to the new team set to debut on the F1 grid next season.
The entry of the new team has opened up two additional race seats, attracting interest from drivers who were left without a spot this year. Schumacher, aged 26, is eager to reinvigorate his F1 career after being dropped by Haas in 2022 following a brief two-season stint where he accumulated only 12 points across 43 races.
Following his departure from Haas, Schumacher joined Mercedes as a reserve driver, and later signed with Alpine to compete in the World Endurance Championship, achieving three podium finishes so far. He aims to leverage his success in WEC to make a comeback in F1, viewing it as unfinished business.
In recent statements to Brazilian media, Schumacher revealed ongoing discussions with Cadillac, expressing optimism about the opportunity and the positive direction of the negotiations. However, the final decision on the two coveted race seats is pending, with former F1 champion Jacques Villeneuve cautioning against selecting Schumacher, citing his lack of experience and past struggles at Haas.
Meanwhile, Cadillac is reportedly nearing an agreement to sign Sergio Perez, a six-time F1 race winner, who was released by Red Bull last year. Another strong contender for a seat is Valtteri Bottas, a Mercedes reserve driver with 10 F1 victories to his name, considered a more favorable choice by Villeneuve due to his experience and track record with Mercedes.
As discussions continue, the F1 community awaits Cadillac’s decision on their driver lineup for the upcoming season.
