Germany Accuses Russia of Drone Attack at Airport

Must read

The German government accused Russia of a drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport last month, leading to the planned closure of a Russian consulate. The drone, carrying explosives, was discovered near a Ukrainian plane on Aug. 4 but was defused. German officials raised concerns about the incident’s severity.

Western officials have long accused Moscow of engaging in disruptive activities across Europe to undermine support for Ukraine and destabilize European nations. German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt highlighted the similarities between the drone attack components and previous Russian operations in Ukraine, suggesting a link to Russian state entities.

Despite the intricate planning and technical expertise involved in the drone attack, authorities believe the execution was carried out by lower-level agents. The Russian consulate in Bonn will be closed, effective Sept. 18, along with the Russian House cultural center in Berlin.

In response, Germany plans to propose adding more Russian individuals to EU sanctions lists related to hybrid attacks. It also intends to enhance entry controls for Russians and increase pressure on suspected tankers transporting Russian oil in violation of sanctions. The Russian ambassador was summoned to the Foreign Ministry in Berlin.

Russian officials denied involvement in the drone attack, calling the accusations a pretext to escalate tensions. Russian President Vladimir Putin dismissed the allegations, suggesting they were fabricated to divert attention from internal issues. The EU has imposed numerous sanctions on Russia since the Ukraine conflict, affecting thousands of entities and individuals.

NATO and European allies expressed solidarity with Germany following the incident, reaffirming their support against Russian aggression. The German cabinet recently approved granting broader powers to intelligence services to counteract sabotage and hacking attempts. Meanwhile, Poland reported recent acts of sabotage, including arson, prompting concerns about foreign intelligence activities.
