“Search for New Home for St. John’s Library Faces Setback”

Must read

A campaign to locate a new home for a library in the west end of St. John’s has encountered a setback, but an advocate remains optimistic about securing a new location soon. The Michael Donovan Public Library ceased operations at the Waterford Valley Mall on Topsail Road two months ago due to the expiration of its rental agreement.

A recent tender initiated by the provincial government to identify a new site did not receive any proposals, as disclosed by AllNewfoundlandLabrador. Josh Smee, vice-chair of the non-profit advisory board Friends of the St. John’s Public Library, expressed frustration and disappointment over the situation, emphasizing the community’s need for a library. Despite its modest size, the library was well-received by patrons.

Smee highlighted the setback caused by the unsuccessful tender, leading to delays in the process. However, he remains hopeful about reopening the library in the west end, citing continued interest in the initiative. He acknowledged the library’s absence is felt by its users and urged landlords with available space in the area to engage in the process actively.

The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure, through spokesperson Janelle Simms, stated that consultations with Newfoundland and Labrador Public Libraries are ongoing to determine the next course of action, emphasizing the commitment to retaining the library in the west end of St. John’s. Smee conveyed the community’s strong attachment to the library and praised the dedication of the staff despite the challenges posed by the inadequate physical space.

Library patron Juanette Anthony expressed her disappointment over the closure of the Michael Donovan Public Library, emphasizing its convenience and the importance of its resources, particularly computer access. She expressed a desire for the library to reopen in the same vicinity, with expanded facilities to accommodate more users and resources.

The search for a new home for the library continues, with efforts focused on securing an appropriate location in the west end of St. John’s. The community’s support for the library’s revival remains steadfast, underscoring the impact of its absence on residents.
