“UK Honors VJ Day Veterans Amid Ongoing Support Efforts”

Must read

VJ Day commemorates the ultimate triumph at the end of a historic conflict that reshaped the world. Today, we express our deep gratitude to those who served in the Far East during that time.

Prior to becoming the Labour MP for Dover and Deal, I dedicated over five years to the UK Armed Forces, engaging in three operational missions – one in Iraq and two in Afghanistan. Witnessing firsthand the enduring influence of Second World War veterans on today’s servicemen and women, I recognize their unwavering commitment.

The toll of conflict is evident in the loss of lives, displaced families, and shattered communities. It is crucial to honor and preserve the stories of our VJ Day veterans to ensure that their sacrifices and the lessons of history remain ingrained in our collective memory.

In a world facing increasing volatility, our dedication to peace and security must be complemented by robust support for those who safeguard it. The current Labour government, in power for just over a year, is resolute in its mission to renew the nation’s bond with its defenders. This commitment includes enshrining the Armed Forces Covenant in law and establishing an Armed Forces Commissioner.

While progress continues, we take pride in achievements thus far, such as reclaiming 36,000 military residences into public ownership and allocating over £7 billion during this Parliament to address neglected accommodation issues.

As we navigate a rapidly changing world, the recent pledge by the Prime Minister at the NATO Summit to increase national security spending to 5% of GDP by 2035 underscores the ongoing importance of supporting our armed forces. On this significant anniversary, let us pay homage to our VJ Day heroes, honor the fallen, and acknowledge the enduring dedication of our servicemen and women who carry forward their legacy.

We are streamlining access to support for veterans through the new VALOUR system, enhancing assistance with housing, employment, and healthcare. Last year, the UK Armed Forces received their most substantial pay raise in over two decades, underscoring the imperative of sustaining our support into the future.

In conclusion, as we reflect on the significance of this milestone, let us remember and celebrate the contributions of our VJ Day veterans, ensuring their sacrifices are never forgotten as we look to the future.
