Nepal’s former First Lady has passed away following an incident where protestors set fire to her residence. The unrest in Nepal was triggered by the government’s recent decision to block 26 social media platforms, including major ones like Facebook and YouTube. Rajyalaxmi Chitrakar, the ex-first lady and spouse of former Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal, lost her life due to the fire at her home.
Mrs. Chitrakar was rushed to Kirtipur Burn Hospital for urgent medical care but succumbed to her injuries. Authorities are conducting investigations into the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
In a recent development, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has resigned from his position after calling for a multi-party meeting to address the ongoing protests in the country. Demonstrations persisted despite his resignation, with protesters continuing to occupy the streets, vandalize government buildings, and target political figures.
The president has accepted Oli’s resignation and appointed him to head an interim government until a new administration is established. The situation remains uncertain regarding Oli’s authority and whereabouts.
The protests, initially sparked by the social media ban which has now been revoked, have evolved into a larger discontentment with the government. Demonstrators have breached Nepal’s parliament in Kathmandu, resulting in chaotic scenes with the building on fire and protesters rallying around it.
Amid the unrest, a 22-year-old university student was injured by a live copper bullet allegedly fired by the police during a peaceful protest. Calls for dialogue and peaceful resolution have been made by President Ram Chandra Poudel and the army to de-escalate the situation.
Incidents of violence against political figures, including the attack on Nepali Congress party leader Sher Bahadur Deuba and his wife, have been reported. The party, part of the ruling coalition, has faced aggression from the protesters.
Protesters are demanding justice for the lives lost and a change in the current government, expressing their dissatisfaction with the leadership. The need for dialogue and resolution to prevent further escalation of tensions has been emphasized by the authorities amidst the ongoing turmoil in Nepal.
