A fugitive who had been evading authorities for nearly four years while on the run with his three young children is now the subject of a forensic investigation at the makeshift camp where they were found. New Zealand police have shared images of the secluded and muddy location deep in the bush where two of Tom Phillips’ children were located, while the third child was found separately after their father was killed in a confrontation with law enforcement.
Phillips disappeared with his children, Jayda, Maverick, and Ember, in December 2021 following a custody dispute. Despite limited sightings over the years, the family remained elusive until recent developments led to the discovery of the children. The campsite, littered with quad bikes, spare tires, firearms, and other items, was described as well-hidden within dense bushland.
Authorities believe that the camp was temporary and that the family may have been assisted by others, as they were likely moving around. The successful search for the children followed a police response to an attempted burglary, resulting in a confrontation where the father was fatally shot. The children, now in safe custody, are undergoing mental health support as part of their recovery process.
The mother of the children expressed relief at their safety but also sadness after the long ordeal. She eagerly anticipates their return home and hopes for a peaceful resolution to the events that transpired. The investigation at the campsite is expected to continue for several days, marking the end of a challenging period for the family.
