Benefit Recipients to Receive Early Payments for Christmas and New Year

Must read

Thousands of individuals expecting benefits such as Universal Credit will experience a change in their payment schedule next month due to the Christmas and New Year bank holidays. With Christmas Day falling on a Thursday and Boxing Day on a Friday this year, benefit recipients due on these days can anticipate receiving their payments a day earlier on Wednesday, December 24. Similarly, as New Year’s Day, a bank holiday, lands on a Thursday, those expecting payments on this day should receive them on Wednesday, December 31.

Although the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has not officially confirmed the exact timetable for Christmas and New Year benefit payments, the payment pattern aligns with previous years’ schedules. It’s essential to note that early payments mean a longer gap until the next scheduled payment, necessitating careful budgeting.

The frequency of benefit payments varies based on the specific benefit claimed. Universal Credit is paid on a fixed day each month, while Tax Credits are typically disbursed every four weeks or weekly. Child Benefit is usually paid every four weeks on a Monday or Tuesday. If a benefit payment is delayed, individuals should first verify the date on their award notice and bank account. If the payment remains missing, contacting the appropriate helpline is advisable, though note that these services may be closed on bank holidays.
