“Beware: Post-Christmas Hacking Risks Rise”

Must read

The government is cautioning households about the heightened risk of hacking during the post-Christmas period. With many individuals receiving ‘smart’ devices as Christmas gifts, the number of internet-connected gadgets in UK homes continues to rise. These devices range from smart speakers, fitness trackers, and security cameras to modern appliances like fridges, thermostats, kettles, washing machines, and toys.

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), a division of GCHQ, has highlighted the security vulnerabilities of unsecured devices that could potentially be exploited by criminals to infiltrate a household’s network or launch cyber attacks. Recent analysis revealed that connected homes face an average of 10 attacks every 24 hours, with security measures successfully averting approximately 1,736 threats per minute.

In an effort to enhance cybersecurity, the government is urging households to invest five minutes in setting up two-step verification on new device accounts or enabling automatic updates. Baroness Lloyd, the Cyber Security Minister, emphasized the importance of securing smart devices to safeguard families during the holiday season.

NCSC’s Director for National Resilience, Jonathon Ellison, advised users to ensure that new smart devices are equipped with essential security features. By following NCSC’s guidelines and activating two-step verification for critical accounts, individuals can better protect their homes and sensitive information.

The UK government asserts its leadership in safeguarding families against cyber threats, citing the Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure regulations implemented last year. These regulations mandate that all smart devices sold in the UK meet minimum security standards, including the prohibition of default or easily predictable passwords.

The festive security checklist includes essential steps to secure smart devices and enhance cybersecurity practices for households.
