Boxing legend Ricky Hatton was discovered deceased by hanging, an inquest revealed today. Hatton, a former world champion in two weight classes, was found dead at his residence in Manchester by his manager and close friend Paul Speak last month. He was laid to rest recently, with fans lining the streets of the city before a service at Manchester Cathedral.
During the inquest this morning, coroner Alison Mutch disclosed that Hatton was found unresponsive in his bedroom by Mr. Speak, who was supposed to accompany him to Dubai for a press conference to announce his comeback fight. Hatton lived alone and was last seen by his family on September 12, appearing well. However, he failed to attend a scheduled event the following day before being found unresponsive by Mr. Speak on September 14.
Although the results of the post-mortem examination are pending, the provisional cause of death was determined to be hanging. A full inquest is scheduled for March 20. Mr. Speak expressed his belief that Hatton did not intend to take his own life, emphasizing that Hatton had a promising future.
Hatton had shown positive signs in the days leading up to his passing, including sharing gym workouts on Instagram and filming an encouraging video for a bullied child. His family described him as much more than a boxing champion, highlighting his role as a loving father, grandfather, brother, and friend.
A multitude of mourners, including prominent figures from the boxing and sports world, gathered to pay their respects to Hatton at his memorial service. His impact on the boxing community was evident through his remarkable career and the outpouring of support following his tragic death.
