A British man has been convicted of the drug-induced killing of another man he met for a weekend rendezvous, potentially facing a sentence of up to 20 years in prison. Aaron Rainbow, a helicopter pilot hailing from Surrey, was found guilty by a jury of violently and deliberately murdering Oscar Tornero, 38. The fatal attack involved Rainbow stabbing Tornero six times in various areas of his body after consuming crystal meth and GHB together.
Rainbow, who claimed self-defense before his trial commenced on October 8, expressed that he experienced a state of confusion and paranoia due to the influence of chemsex drugs during the incident at Tornero’s residence in Vallgorguina. Testifying during the trial, Rainbow stated that he felt he was not fully responsible for the events that unfolded and became fearful that Tornero was recording their drug-fueled encounter and that unknown individuals were waiting to harm him.
Witnesses reported seeing Tornero attempting to escape his home in critical condition following the October 17, 2023, attack, with a neighbor alerting the police after hearing Rainbow threatening violence. Further revelations in court included testimony from an individual who engaged in a drug-fueled encounter with Rainbow in London days prior to the deadly altercation, highlighting a similar pattern of violence and drug use.
Prosecutors outlined the events leading to the tragic outcome, detailing the meeting between Rainbow and Tornero for drug-affected sexual activities that culminated in Rainbow fatally stabbing Tornero with a knife before Tornero’s attempt to flee, resulting in his death. The prosecution sought a 19-year prison term for Rainbow, which was subsequently increased to 20 years following the jury’s decision, aligning with the demands of the victim’s family.
Rainbow’s defense team had initially argued for his acquittal, citing temporary insanity, drug intoxication, and overwhelming fear as contributing factors to his actions. Despite the defense’s efforts, Rainbow was convicted by an 8-1 majority verdict. The sentencing will be determined at a later date as per the Spanish legal process, with Rainbow having spent two years in prison since his arrest, which will factor into his eventual release date.
