“British Troops Deployed to Israel for Ceasefire Monitoring”

Must read

British troops have been deployed to Israel to assist in monitoring a delicate ceasefire in Gaza following a request from the United States. The UK will play a key role in a multinational force, with a senior commander and a small team stationed in the region. The British commander will serve as a deputy in the American-led Civil Military Coordination Centre in Israel, alongside troops from Qatar, Egypt, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates.

This development comes shortly after Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper previously stated that there were no plans to send soldiers as part of the force. Defence Secretary John Healey emphasized that the UK’s contribution will focus on supporting the ceasefire monitoring efforts led by other nations.

The ceasefire, brokered by US President Donald Trump, faced a test when Israel accused Hamas of killing two soldiers. In response, Israel conducted airstrikes in southern Gaza, resulting in casualties among Palestinians. However, both Israel and Hamas reaffirmed their commitment to the ceasefire following the incidents.

The Ministry of Defence confirmed that UK planning officers, including a two-star deputy commander, have integrated into the US-led Civil Military Coordination Centre to support post-conflict stability in Gaza. The UK is collaborating with international partners to assist in the peace process and remains aligned with US-led planning efforts.

The multinational force, which includes up to 200 US troops, will not operate within Gaza but will coordinate with the Israeli Defense Forces. Its role, chain of command, legal status, and operational details are still being finalized. Additionally, the force is expected to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to Palestinians in Gaza, addressing challenges such as delays in food convoys by Israel.
