The traditional copper cables that have facilitated communication for over a century are being phased out, with the shutdown scheduled to occur within a year, specifically on January 31, 2027.
This transition requires millions of users to migrate to new digital services that utilize the internet for making calls to their contacts. While the change may seem substantial, BT and other companies emphasize its necessity due to the outdated, unreliable, and overloaded nature of the existing copper infrastructure, which no longer meets contemporary connectivity demands.
BT’s latest offering, Digital Voice, presents an upgraded system that ensures a more stable connection, enhanced features like clearer audio, call forwarding to mobile devices, and improved call screening to combat scams and unwanted solicitations. Despite over three million UK households having already adopted Digital Voice, many more are yet to make the switch.
In a message conveyed to Mirror Online, BT emphasized the importance of acting promptly, warning that neglecting communication from the provider could result in disruptions to phone and broadband services as the deadline approaches.
As the era of copper wires fades away, it is crucial for individuals to ascertain if their landline and home phone are prepared for the impending change. The switching process is relatively straightforward, as numerous BT handsets are compatible with digital landlines. Retaining existing phone numbers and unchanged billing are typical, with a simple switch involving plugging the home phone into the broadband hub instead of the traditional wall socket. In cases where this setup fails, contacting the provider or arranging an engineer visit may be necessary.
Additionally, BT urges customers with special requirements, such as those dependent on telecare devices or pendant alarms, to promptly inform the provider for tailored support arrangements.
