People were advised to quickly close their windows as firefighters responded to a “chlorine cloud” incident in Surrey this afternoon. The Surrey Fire and Rescue Service shared a map indicating a significant portion of Surrey, near Oxshott, was affected by the chemical issue. A spokesperson mentioned that the fire and rescue service presence would continue throughout the day.

Sussex Fire and Rescue confirmed that residents could now safely open their windows and doors as the situation was under control. The spokesperson assured the public that the chemicals were contained, eliminating any risk to residents.

Throughout the afternoon, the fire service maintained their presence at the scene of the chlorine cloud, with activity observed in the area past 4 pm, nearly four hours post their initial response.

Chlorine, commonly used in swimming pools and cleaning, is not naturally present in gaseous form. However, it can be released as a gas if accidentally leaked from an industrial site or transport vehicle, according to government sources.

A Surrey Fire and Rescue spokesperson disclosed that they were alerted to the incident around midday today. They cautioned the public to be vigilant and detailed the situation involving the mixing of swimming pool chemicals resulting in a “chlorine cloud” in the vicinity.
