Dame Sheila Hancock recently shared that she continues to have conversations with her late spouse, John Thaw, who passed away in 2002 at 60 due to oesophageal cancer. John, renowned for his role in “Inspector Morse,” was married to Sheila, star of “The Rag Trade,” for 28 years before his demise.
In a candid disclosure, Dame Sheila opened up about grappling with loneliness and its impact on her well-being. While her friends and family offer solace, their eventual departure leaves her grappling with a profound sense of loss, missing the unique bond she shared with her departed partner.
Expressing her emotional turmoil, she pondered aloud, “Who is there now to wipe my tears and bring me joy?” Despite her struggles, she finds solace in conversing with her late husband, particularly during news broadcasts, although their shared critiques of politics and human folly have faded with time.
She described her solitude as immensely challenging, sometimes waking up overwhelmed by the prospect of facing another solitary day. Despite considering getting a cat for companionship, she reconsidered due to concerns about the pet outliving her.
Earlier this year, the award-winning actress appeared on Katherine Ryan’s podcast, discussing the experience of aging. Reflecting on reaching 90, she found the milestone extraordinary, noting how her perception of age shifted as others began treating her differently based on her advanced years.
While she doesn’t perceive herself as old, she acknowledged the shift in people’s attitudes and behaviors towards her. Embracing the freedom that age affords, she humorously remarked on using age-related stereotypes to excuse herself from mundane situations.
