Former PDC world champion Michael Smith has announced his temporary departure from the darts scene to undergo laser eye surgery. The 34-year-old, known for his victory over Michael van Gerwen at Alexandra Palace in 2023, has faced challenges this year after revealing his struggle with arthritis in his right hand earlier in January. This health issue has led him to drop to 21st place globally and miss out on the World Matchplay in Blackpool for the first time in over a decade.
Representatives of Darting Promotions Limited have provided an update on Smith’s health condition, stating that he has been dealing with arthritis in his right hand and a recent issue with his left foot. Following blood tests, they are hopeful that with medication, these health concerns can be managed moving forward.
Due to a shoulder injury sustained during Christmas, Smith had to withdraw from upcoming events in Germany to undergo a necessary scan. Despite these setbacks, he remains positive about resolving his health issues and returning to his best form. Smith shared this update on social media, mentioning his upcoming laser eye surgery and expressing confidence in his comeback despite the obstacles he faces.
While the exact timing of his surgery remains unspecified, it is common for athletes in non-contact sports to take a break post-procedure before resuming their training. Smith, who hasn’t claimed a PDC title since his Ally Pally win, aims to bounce back stronger from his health challenges and continue pursuing success in darts.
Since his World Cup of Darts victory alongside Luke Humphries, Smith has encountered difficulties in major tournaments, culminating in his recent absence from the Pro Tour. Fans may have to wait a while before seeing the Bully Boy back in action on the darts circuit.
