An easyJet traveler shared her experience of challenging the airline’s fine for an oversized bag. Louise Machin was surprised and puzzled when easyJet charged her €58 (£51) upon her return from Chania Airport in Crete, claiming her suitcase was too large despite her prior measurements. After proving the bag’s compliance with the airline’s regulations by contacting the manufacturer, easyJet refunded the fee.
Ms. Machin, a 59-year-old from Crystal Palace, encountered a common issue of inaccurate oversize cabin bag fines, as highlighted by consumer group Which?. Instances of travelers being penalized due to discrepancies in airport bag sizers have been reported, prompting passengers to be extra cautious with their baggage dimensions.
While heading to Crete in April, Ms. Machin, a freelance film and TV sales director, faced the fine on her return journey despite her previous successful departure from London Gatwick. Despite her efforts to prove her bag’s conformity, ground staff at Chania Airport insisted on the payment, creating a confrontational situation. Eventually, with confirmation from the bag manufacturer, Cabin Max, easyJet agreed to reimburse Ms. Machin.
Which? pointed out similar cases of airlines wrongly fining passengers for minor size infractions, such as protruding handles or straps. The organization advised affected travelers to challenge such fees if confident in their bag’s compliance. Despite easyJet’s assurance of sizer accuracy at Chania Airport, they refunded Ms. Machin and acknowledged her refund request, emphasizing their commitment to handling customer feedback on a case-by-case basis.
