Nigel Farage expressed discontent with a Reform MP who made controversial remarks about Black and Asian representation in advertisements, stopping short of labeling the comments as racist. Sarah Pochin, the MP for Runcorn and Helsby, issued an apology following the backlash over her statement. Despite calls for her dismissal, Farage refrained from categorizing her comments as racist.
During an event attended by Farage and grooming gangs survivor Ellie Reynolds, discussions revolved around the need for a Parliamentary investigation into the scandal. Reynolds, who resigned from the survivors panel, criticized the inquiry as “corrupt.” Farage proposed a thorough Parliamentary probe to address the issue, emphasizing the public’s dwindling patience.
Labour Party chairwoman Anna Turley urged Reform UK to revoke Sarah Pochin’s party whip in response to her racially charged comments. Turley labeled the remarks as racist and demanded immediate action from Farage. Keir Starmer, the Prime Minister, echoed these sentiments, condemning Pochin’s remarks as “shocking racism.”
Farage refrained from directly accusing Pochin of racism but acknowledged his dissatisfaction with her comments. He emphasized the broader context of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) issues in the advertising industry. Farage called for a Parliamentary inquiry into grooming gangs, aiming to restore public trust by utilizing Parliament’s investigative powers.
Ellie Reynolds criticized the grooming gangs inquiry setup, highlighting the lack of survivor representation in key positions. Farage underscored the gravity of the scandal, criticizing the government’s handling of the situation. The Liberal Democrats tabled a motion in Parliament condemning Pochin’s remarks and demanding action from Farage.
Despite the ongoing controversy, Farage is set to address the issues surrounding the grooming gangs inquiry in an upcoming press conference. The probe has faced challenges, with several survivors resigning from the panel and delays in appointing a chair. Turley and other political figures have called on Farage to address the situation and respond to Pochin’s comments.
