A father who staged the abduction of his infant son and subsequently killed him has been handed a sentence of over 30 years in prison. Jake Haro, 32, confessed to the murder during a prior court appearance, following an elaborate ruse with his wife Rebecca that misled authorities for more than two months.
The fabricated story involved an alleged assault on Rebecca while she was changing their baby, Emmanuel, in their car outside a Yucaipa, California store. However, inconsistencies in their narrative prompted police scrutiny, leading to their arrest a week later. Investigation later revealed that Haro was responsible for the child’s death, though Emmanuel’s body has not been found.
Haro was sentenced for the murder, filing a false police report, and endangering a child. His total prison term will exceed three decades. Meanwhile, Rebecca Haro, 41, has pleaded not guilty and is currently detained on a $1 million bail, awaiting a court appearance in January.
Prosecutors in Riverside County sought a sentence of 31 years to life for Haro due to Emmanuel’s murder and a previous incident involving another child in 2018. Haro, who previously admitted to endangering his daughter, causing severe injuries, now faces the consequences of his actions.
Brandon Smith, assistant district attorney, emphasized the gravity of Haro’s crimes, stating that he had taken the lives of two young children. The tragic events unfolded when Rebecca reported Emmanuel’s apparent kidnapping from a sporting goods store in Yucaipa, leading to a widespread search and media attention.
Rebecca recounted the harrowing incident to the press, detailing how she lost sight of her son after a brief interaction in the parking lot. Her account, accompanied by visible injuries, initially drew sympathy, but subsequent inquiries raised doubts about the authenticity of her story.
