A security guard’s appeal against his sentence for planning to kidnap, rape, and murder TV host Holly Willoughby has been rejected. Gavin Plumb received a life term with a minimum of 16 years last July after being found guilty of soliciting murder and aiding in rape and kidnapping.
Described as a significant threat to women, Plumb caused fear and alarm to the former Good Morning Britain presenter. Despite seeking to challenge his sentence at the Royal Courts of Justice in London, the Court of Appeal, including Justices Martin Spencer and Norton, upheld the original decision.
Lord Justice Edis emphasized the seriousness of the offenses, stating that the detailed and horrifying plans targeting Holly Willoughby justified the life sentence. The judge highlighted the extreme harm intended and the disturbing nature of the proposed actions.
Plumb’s defense argued that his physical limitations, including immobility due to obesity, made executing the plans unrealistic. The Crown Prosecution Service defended the life sentence, citing the profound impact and risk posed by Plumb’s actions.
During the trial, evidence revealed Plumb’s elaborate kidnapping scheme, which included preparing an “abduction kit” and discussing ambushing the star at her family home. Despite claiming it was mere fantasy, the court found Plumb’s intentions to be serious and dangerous.
Justice Edward Murray commended Holly Willoughby’s bravery and labeled Plumb as a dangerous individual with sadistic and brutal plans. Previous convictions for violence against women and the detailed nature of the kidnapping plot solidified the court’s decision to uphold the life sentence.
Plumb’s online conversations with an undercover officer exposed his sinister intentions, leading to his arrest just days before the planned attack. The court concluded that the severity and realism of Plumb’s plans warranted the life imprisonment.
